At least thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
