"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" a message reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: I also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are not alone. Several celebrated supporters have publicly coveted the position.

One thing is obvious a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their videos often show them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to form a group."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The group have called into home, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the award.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The record came out of a phase of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes track departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed toughness called for a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The trio's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

One man broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet the band will always be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
